YouTube has emerged as the most popular social media platform in South Korea with nearly three in 10 users relying on the platform, a poll showed Friday.According to the January survey of 200 South Koreans aged 20 or older, 27.6 percent of respondents picked YouTube as their favorite social network platform. Naver Blog came next with 17 percent, followed by Facebook with 15.6 percent, Instagram with 14.8 percent, Band with 11.2 percent and Kakao Story with 9.6 percent, according to the poll taken by local pollster Open Survey.Meanwhile, Naver, South Korea’s top online portal, was the most popular search engine in the country with an overwhelming 75.2 percent of those surveyed choosing it. Google placed second with 11.8 percent, trailed by Daum with 10.2 percent.

In Tunisian high schools, girls are required to wear uniform, while boys are allowed to wear what they like. Now, the girls are up in arms.One morning, instead of turning up for class wearing the regulation navy blue uniform, a defiant group of adolescent girls came to school in white T-shirts instead, demanding an "end to discrimination."At the elite Bizerte public school in the north, as is the case in most high schools in the North African country, pupils have to sign a school rule stipulating that wearing a uniform applies to girls only.One day in last September, supervisors reminded senior female students who did not abide by this rule that if they did not wear uniform, they would be sent home.This "injustice" inspired many of the girls to take to social networks and vent their feelings. The girls agreed to take collective action from the following day. Several boys did the same, in solidarity with their classmates.

Nearly 800 doctors and medical residents in the Canadian province of Quebec have signed a letter protesting against plans to raise their pay, arguing that the funds would be better spent on other areas of the province’s beleaguered healthcare system."We, Quebec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be cancelled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of healthcare workers.’’It was drafted late last month by Médecins québécois pour le régime public, a group of doctors and medical students who support public healthcare.The letter says recent pay raises negotiated by their professional associations as "shocking", given the "draconian cuts" that have left nurses, orderlies and others overworked and underpaid, as well as led to a widespread lack of services for patients.The Quebec government recently announced increases of 1.4% and around 1.8% for specialists and general practitioners respectively, while recent data suggests that the average specialist in Quebec makes C$403,500 annually, while family physicians make C$255,000.

Despite cold weather and long, dark winters, Finland has overtaken Norway to become the happiest nation on earth, according to a UN report.Finland topped a list of 156 countries ranked in the World Happiness Report on factors such as life expectancy, social support and corruption. It emerged as the happiest place even though its relatively little sun and low temperatures are often blamed for high rates of depression.Finland vaulted to the top from fifth place in last year’s report, nudging Norway down into second. The top four places are taken by Nordic nations. Denmark was placed third this year and Iceland fourth. All the Nordic countries scored highly on income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom and trust. The study found that the 10 happiest countries also scored highest on immigrant happiness, suggesting that migrants’ wellbeing was tied to the quality of life in their adopted home. With a population of around 5.5 million people, Finland counted some 300,000 foreigners in 2016.

Seoul Metropolitan Library will close an exhibition room dedicated to poet Ko Un Monday amid the escalating sexual harassment allegations against him. The city government spent 300 million won last November to open the Maninbo Library, a room dedicated to Ko on the third floor of the library.Maninbo, a title from a series of poems by Ko highlights the 10,000 people he met directly and indirectly during his lifetime. Ko has been touted repeatedly by local media as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. His works have been published in more than a dozen countries and received numerous awards at home and abroad.Ko’s alleged sexual harassment surfaced after female poet Choi Young-mi wrote a poem in which the narrator describes an unconscionable assault by a famous and senior poet. The poem was released in early February. Media and industry sources pointed to Ko as the alleged offender.Ko has denied all allegations and has not apologized to the woman. Ko’s poems will also be removed from school textbooks, according to the Ministry of Education.

Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino have responded to director Peter Jackson’s comments that Harvey Weinstein blacklisted them.
