A 112-year-old Japanese man born months before Albert Einstein published his theory of special relativity was recognized on Tuesday as the world’s oldest man.Masazo Nonaka, born on July 25, 1905, took the title after Francisco Nunez Olivera of Spain died this year at the aged 113, Guinness World Records said.A farmer and lumberjack in his youth, Nonaka later ran a hot spring inn in his hometown of Ashoro, on Hokkaido island, 900 km north of Tokyo, and raised two sons and three daughters.Nonaka enjoys dipping in a spa and is fond of sweets, especially a strawberry sponge cake. He was joined at an award ceremony on Tuesday by relatives and officials. The Guinness World Records title for the oldest man who ever lived is held by another Japan man, Jiroemon Kimura, who died in 2013 at the age of 116 years and 54 days. The greatest authenticated age for any human is 122 years, 164 days by Jeanne Louise Calment of France, who died in 1997. Everyone has that spot in their house or car where they let the mail and receipts pile up.For 68-year old Jimmie Smith, it was an old shirt hanging in his closet. Stuffed in its pockets was a stack of unchecked lottery tickets."I always told myself, ’I’ll check them when I have the time,’" the New Jersey man said. It’s a good thing he did. Because had he waited two days longer, he’d have lost out on $24.1 million.More than a year ago, Smith bought a ticket to the New York Lotto. The winning numbers for the May 25, 2016 drawing were: 05 - 12 - 13 - 22 - 25 - 35.The New York Gaming Commission knew the winning ticket, worth $24.1 million, was sold at a bodega in New York City - but it didn’t know who bought the ticket.Winners have a year to claim the prize and that expiration day was quickly approaching. So earlier in 2017, the New York Lottery started to get the word out."We urge New York Lottery players: Check your pockets. Check your glove box. Look under the couch cushions. If you have this winning ticket, we look forward to meeting you," Gweneth Dean, director of the Commission’s Division of the Lottery, said at the time.

Russians are drinking less than at any point since the fall of the Soviet Union, figures show, as a raft of government measures bear fruit and healthy living becomes ever more fashionable.Vodka might still serve as a national symbol but last year Russians drank less alcohol per capita than the French or Germans, according to World Health Organization report that factored in consumption of bootleg booze. And tobacco use also plummeted by more than a fifth between 2009 and 2016, down to 30 percent of Russians smoking.WHO’s representative in Russia Melita Vujnovic points the achievement to legislation introduced over the last 13 years to combat a public health crisis and boost life expectancy, including a ban on shops selling any alcohol after 11 pm and increases in the minimum retail price of spirits. Also, a general trend towards healthy living was also behind the cut back in smoking and drinking, especially in larger cities. "Now there’s this focus on wellness, which becomes more fashionable than it was before," said an official.

Japanese police have arrested a 73-year-old man suspected of keeping his son in a wooden cage for over 20 years.Yoshitane Yamasaki said he locked up his son, now 42, because he suffered mental problems and was sometimes violent, according to officials quoted by public broadcaster NHK.The cage, 1m in height and less than 2m wide, was in a hut next to Yamasaki’s house in the city of Sanda. The son, who now suffers a bent back, is being looked after by authorities.Local media report he has been in the care of a social welfare facility in western Japan since January. A visit by a city official to Yamasaki’s home at the time alerted authorities to the 42-year-old man’s confinement.Investigators believe Yamasaki began confining his mentally ill son from the age of 16, when he began to "act up". For the time being, police have only arrested the pensioner for caging his son for 36 hours on 18 January. Yamasaki has reportedly admitted the allegations, telling authorities that he fed his son every day, and allowed him to bathe every other day.

An unknown killer preying on pigs in China has been identified as a new kind of coronavirus. And like the deadly SARS virus, this one also got its start in bats.In late 2016, pigs mysteriously started having intense diarrhea and vomiting on farms in China’s southeastern Guangdong province. By May 2017, the disease had killed 24,693 piglets. By analyzing samples from sick piglets, researchers pieced together the genetic blueprint of the virus causing swine acute diarrhea syndrome, or SADS. It shares 95 percent of its genetic code with another coronavirus, HKU2, detected in cave-dwelling horseshoe bats in 2016. Evidence suggests these two coronaviruses share a common ancestor and that SADS jumped from bats to pigs, researchers report April 4 in Nature. No farm workers tested positive for SADS, so the disease doesn’t appear to infect humans.

The majority of South Korea’s recyclables are exported to China. Beijing’s recent decision to ban solid waste imports is causing a ripple effect on the recycling programs in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province area. The ban on imports of 24 types of recyclables - a reflection of China’s tougher stance on pollution - mostly impacts local recyclers that used to sell waste to China. Some of the 48 for-profit garbage service companies operating in three metropolitan cities, including Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon said last week that they will halt collecting recyclables banned by China starting April 1, citing low margins and increasing processing cost.

Alain Robert, sometimes known as the "French Spiderman" for climbing skyscrapers worldwide, is still defying gravity at the age of 55.He scaled the summit of the fourth-tallest building in Paris’ modern business district on Wednesday after evading security officers who had thwarted an earlier attempt.A hobby that started at 11 years old has taken Robert to more than 150 skyscrapers around the world, including Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, the Eiffel Tower, and the Sydney Opera House."For me, climbing is a passion, it’s a way of life," he said.It took Robert just over an hour to scale to the top of the 187-metre high Tour Total. He has accomplished the feat twice in the past.He often climbs without permission and has been arrested several times. In 2008, he scaled the New York Times building to unfurl a banner on global warming, and was arrested by police.Robert sees no end in sight for his vertiginous adventures."As long as I have the physical strength to scale heights, I will continue to climb,"he said.

An underwater robot has snapped photographs of a pottery urn probably dating from the seventh or eighth century that has been left almost intact at the bottom of Lake Biwako. It is believed to be a reddish brown Haji pottery urn made sometime between the Asuka Period (592-710) and Nara Period (710-784).The urn was found in an underwater archaeological site called the Tsuzuraozaki Kotei Iseki.Since 1924, many pottery pieces, mainly from between the Jomon Pottery Culture Period (c. 8000 B.C.-300 B.C.) and Heian Period (794-1185), have been found at the site at a depth between 10 and 70 meters, often caught in fishing nets.It remains a mystery why so much pottery from such a wide time span have been found at this site. Some speculate a settlement was submerged by a rise in the water level or the pots were sunk there in obscure rituals. Others sidestep romance and suggest it was just a dumping ground for used ceramics.

In Bangkok, the Thai capital, Wireless Road, like many streets, is festooned with electrical and telecom cables, a black web that hangs menacingly overhead. But Bangkok authorities are now untangling the cables and moving them underground as part of an urban renewal.Wireless Road, which got its name from hosting one of Thailand’s first radio transmitting stations, is among dozens of streets targeted in the early phase of the de-cluttering campaign. The project has been planned for years, but had an unexpected progress after Microsoft founder Bill Gates visited Bangkok in 2016 and took a disapproving photo of one street’s wiry web. Less than a week later, the government announced that cleanup was moving forward. So far 1,184 utility poles have been removed from three of the city’s biggest roads. Over the next five years authorities plan to strip cables from 39 more streets totaling 127 kilometers."The main advantage is the security of the electrical system. When the cables are underground, the problem with disturbances that can cause blackouts will be gone," said Bangkok authorities.
